Resort Tax Funding


The Big Sky Resort Area District is accepting Letters of Inquiry (LOIs) for the FY23 (7/1/22-6/30/23) funding cycle beginning on Tuesday, February 1, 2022. Approved applicants will be invited to complete Project Applications beginning Tuesday, March 1, 2022.

How To Apply For Resort Tax Funding

If your organization or its programming is located within the boundaries of the Big Sky Resort Area District and it provides a service, program, or project that provides for the public health, safety, and welfare of the greater Big Sky Resort Area District community, you may apply for Resort Tax funding.

As required by law, an applicant must be a legal entity formed under the laws of the State of Montana. The applicant must be “an entity” that is capable of both “legally and practically” carrying out the purpose of the allocation and located within the Big Sky Resort Area District. The applicant must be a governmental unit, corporation, or limited partnership with the capability of being legally bound by an agreement.

LOIs and supporting documents must be completed using the online portal and must be submitted by Tuesday, February 15, 2022, to be considered for an invitation to complete a Project Application. Project Applications and supporting documents must be completed using the online portal beginning Tuesday, March 1st, and must be submitted by Thursday, March 31, 2022, to be considered for funding.

NEW for FY23! – Sponsors must submit and complete an LOI by February 15 in order to be invited to complete a Project Application(s).

FY22 Funding Awards

Over the course of 2 meetings held on June 7th & 10th, the District’s locally elected Board reviewed project applications from 26 sponsoring organizations. After hearing public comment the board awarded funding on June 10th for 47 projects. A total of $7,057,754 was awarded in addition to the 1% for Infrastructure commitment of $2,716,875 for FY22. Information for Resort Tax Award Recipients

If your organization was awarded Resort Tax funding, you may submit payment requests when an Award Orientation has been completed, an Award Contract has been signed, and you have completed the Post Award Follow Up Form. Requests are processed on the 1st and 15th of each month and organizations can expect to receive payment within 7-10 days of processing.
